Bill's Big Problem

Bill’s Big Problem

Bill Bryson, the famous travel author, is also well known as an anti-litter campaigner and appeared on the TV Panorama programme in 2008, decrying the appalling amount of litter in the towns and cities of Great Britain.

We wrote to him after the programme to tell him about our own Litter Free Largs Campaign and he kindly replied with a postcard saying “Bless you for your heroic effort!”

Since then, Bill has been busy in Glasgow bravely confronting a drunken litter lout who had dropped his fish and chip paper in the street. To his amazement, the culprit apologised and explained that he was very drunk! He then proceeded to pick up the offending litter and put it in the litter bin. Bill pointed out that, having a strong American accent probably helped to protect him from any aggressive reaction.

Do you have any stories of your attempts, successful or not, to approach litter louts and ask them to mend their ways? If you’ve never done so, what do you think of those who do so? Let us know by email.    info@viktheviking.co.uk
