Keep Scotland Beautiful Campaign 2009-04-28
Vik has had a busy few weeks helping me to organise our Spring Clean Up – in fact, a litter picking session in Largs. It was held on Sunday, 26 April and although maybe the weather discouraged some potential volunteers, we ended up with 15 hearty souls who spent three hours cleaning up the beach, through the town and in the parks. It was an education for some of us, finding some very peculiar items of rubbish, but most of the volunteers said they’d be happy to do this again. It’s just as well, as we’re already planning another one! We hope to do the next one in July, in time for the Largs Blooming Lovely competition. Part of the competition includes judging the cleanliness of the town, so we need to do our best to achieve good marks. Any more volunteers? If you want to help to make Largs more beautiful, call me on 01475 689209.
We filled 24 bags of rubbish in those three hours, which makes you wonder what kind of people think it’s OK to let others clean up after them, whether they’re volunteers or cleaners from North Ayrshire Council. It now takes SIX Council cleaners spending every weekday in Largs to keep on top of the rubbish problem. I’m told by Robert, the Council officer, that we could get that down to TWO with more consideration from everyone.
I have to commend a young man in Largs who makes sure the pavement is spotless outside the Victoria Hotel on the seafront. He’s to be seen regularly cleaning up out there, so we want to give him a BIG THANK YOU! He may be small, but he’s a MIGHTY good worker!
