At the end of August every year, Largs holds its famous Viking Festival to celebrate the battle with the Vikings in 1263 which ended in victory for the people of Largs. To commemorate this, and to maintain the now friendly relations with the people of Scandinavia , various events are held in the town over the course of the week.
In 2008, as part of the celebrations, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship, the Largs Bay , arrived in the real Largs Bay . The Captain and crew were honoured visitors and, in turn, they welcomed many of the local people to a reception on board the ship.
As I was one of the lucky guests, I took one of our litter posters together with Wee Vik, our mascot doll. Captain Iles and the crew were most interested in our efforts to make Largs free of litter, and they suggested that they could adopt Wee Vik and take him on their travels. When they heard that we were visiting local schools to talk to the children, they offered to send email postcards from Wee Vik to the children, wherever they went around the world. Their first port of call was Bermuda and we look forward to the next episode in the seafaring adventures of Wee Vik. As you can see from the photos, he's already a loyal member of the crew!
Our local artist who painted the original portrait of Wee Vik also donated her picture of the town crest - a Viking ship and a thistle.
We hope to maintain regular contact with the Largs Bay ship in the future.
